I'd like to start by saying I want to support you, your party, and your campaign in the coming election. I'd also like to warn you up front, the following is going to be harsh, but that's part of what being a leader is. Get used to it.

Stop Waffling. I attended my first political meeting the other day to see you speak. Your speech was good, I was genuinely inspired. I respected what you had to say about Internet privacy, and your stance on the charter of rights. But then someone asked you about your seemingly conflicting stances on the tar sands and positive environmental action. I wanted to crawl in a hole and die. I recognise that it's in the politicians job description to fill air with buzz words when asked something you don't have an answer for. As an environmentalist who's come to terms with the tar sands, *I* could have come up with a better response to those questions. Saying "I don't have a good answer, but I'm committed to finding one" is far better answer than speaking gibberish for 3 minutes. But that's what politicians have to do right? Well, that leads me to my next point.

I felt initially, that you were bringing something new to the table. A new wave of politics free of the jargon and usual camera-to-face small talk that sounds good but says nothing. I thought you'd discovered a new kind of politics where every fifth sentence Wasn't a jab at the opposition. During your speech about inclusion I thought this meant that you were going to try and work with the conservatives you're inevitably going to have to work with. So why disrespect them at every opportunity? I know they have bad policies and have underperformed, guess what? We all know that! But that's why I didn't vote for them! It's not a reason to make jabs so that people cheer. It's a waste. A waste of good 'ol Canadian friendliness, a waste of energy, and a waste of every one's time. Yeah the conservatives made fun of you, turn the other devilishly handsome cheek! You can take a hit, so let them jab and you can be the bigger man!

I thought you were a new kind of politician, that maybe, magically your youth had come with unshakable idealism. I'm disappointed. Be honest, we don't mind if you don't have all the answers. Don't fault others who are in a different position from you, it hurts everyone and makes you look worse than them. Don't make them enemies even if they declare themselves as such. Keep the moral high ground.

I'm watching your twitter feed, I'm following the news. My vote, the vote's of my friends, fellow students, and the votes of my community depend on your attitude. It's a simple thing.

Let's talk about learning resources. We're in the 2013, and if there is something you want to learn, and you have even the most thin connection to the Internet, you have no excuse not to be learning. I'll get back to this point. For starters, here is a a presentation put together with the online software Prezi:

Autonomous Learning

Things to know about this presentation, while this is an effective presentation, the accompanying notes are largely digested information from the scholarly articles listed on the "That's All Folks!" Circle. Pictures have links to their origins at the bottom of the circle. Except for the brains, those are MRI scans of my brain as interpreted through the open source brain imaging software Afni.

Here are the links and descriptions of the Internet resources discussed.

Khan Academy is good for almost all intro level courses, many higher level courses, and even for experts, offers good review and practice in the form of sample problems in fields ranging from maths to history and more.

Investopedia succinctly and expertly explains even the most complex economic concepts with the use of simple and captivating visual aids. While mostly for business students, there are very few people in the world who wouldn't benefit from knowing a few money related concepts.

Beeminder. HOLY CRAP. THERE ARE NO WORDS. Have you ever had a problem motivating yourself to exercise? Do your homework? Perhaps you do them but you don't make progress on the time scale you want. Use Beeminder. Not convinced? Watch the video on thier web site for a better sumary and sales pitch.

Coursera. I can either spend 3 days listing for you all the universities that publish their professional grade learning material, like MIT open course-ware, or Stanford's competing project... Or I can point you to Coursera. The place where all they do is compile that in a simple to search database. Now go learn yourselves some biochemistry.

Stumble-upon is usually viewed as a waste of time, and honestly it's usually used for that. What people generally don't think about, is that it has a search engine format. Think about it. Hundreds of thousands of people, day in day out, crawling across the entire Internet separating the chaff from the wheat. At worst, you'll be entertained, at best, you'll find academic level material that is fascinating and useful.

Wikipedia. Normally I'd say "DUH", but most people don't use wikipedia to it's maximum potential, even when they think they are. Don't be a tourist, go behind the curtain and have a look what's really going on, read the discussion page every article has one, and if it doesn't, you need to start it.

TED speaks for itself, literally. While it may not be in a standard academic format, I challenge you to find a more reputable source for information. If you've been living under a rock, go watch at least 5 videos. You'll feel like someone dry cleaned your mind.

While "Instead of TV" isn't exactly going to help you in a specific course, stimulating learning in different fields is always a good idea. You can't know too much and learning in one field helps in every other field.

Now for the stuff we didn't have time for.

-Help the world and get smarter with Free Rice.

-Want to harness the worlds strongest, smartest collective intelligence for personal learning? Well... if you insist. UREDDIT.

-"Remember that website?", "where did I see that?", "I read it online back when I was a teenager..." sound like a problem you're having? Don't worry. The internet never actually deletes ANYTHING EVER. Find that thing with this thing: The Way Back Machine

-wikinotes is wikipedia except specifically for Your course, yes, yours.

-Think Wolfram Alpha is just for maths? Think again. Ask it questions about cigarettes, your thesis question, caffeine, ask it what the weather was like on the day you were born. (rain and overcast with an average of 3 degrees for me. No lightning sadly.)

-The Baron

PS.

1) Prezi is based on google chromes "chrome frame" technology, and works best in the chrome web brouwser.

2) For linux users, getting a copy of afni is as easy as typing "sudo apt-get install afni" in your terminal. It's coded mostly in python.

3) If you're in SEL149, leave a comment, it's a bit like signing a guest book.

I'm a big fan of the Pomodoro technique for getting shit done. The idea is simple: work for 25 minutes then take a 5 minute break. After four 25 minute blocks, take a longer break. Pretty simple right? You can start using it with just a simple timer... OR you could use an app! My two favourites are pomodroido, which adds an achievement system and CherryTomato, which asks you to rate your pomodoros when they are completed.

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
But in researching pomodoro tools, I couldn't find a single web app. So I've decided to try and fix that by writing one myself. Hopefully it will include the best bits of pomodroido and CherryTomato AND run in the cloud! This is also going to be a chance for me to hone my <strike>javascript</strike> coffeescript skills by working with batman.js which is a webapp framework that's developed and maintained by people at my work.

<h2 style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Getting started

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Getting batman installed was pretty simple. I just followed the instructions over here.

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
The batman follows the MVC architecture, so to get started we need a model, a controller and a view. I started off using batman's built in generator, but it created a much to complicated layout for me so I took out all the un-important bits. Alfred was what I based my design off of as the source is on github. After much rm'ing I was left with:

<li style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">index.html

<li style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">package.json

<li style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">pomobat.coffee

<li style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">README.md

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">build/

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">assets/

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Pomobat.coffee app contains the code to initialize a batman app, the controller and the model. The view is defined WITHIN the HTML (which took me a while to figure out). You need to enclose EVERYTHING within a view div (
) otherwise none of the batman magic will happen.

Most of the view stuff is done through bindings, which are pretty damn fantastic. I have a pretty simple model, so most of the code I've written goes into my controller. It's pretty ugly at present, but it works.

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
I'm no designer so I went with the amazingly pretty and easy to use Bootstrap framework. It means my app looks a lot like twitter, but I think it's rather pretty.

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Deploying my app to heroku was somewhat of a challenge. For those of you who don't know, Heroku is a service that will host web apps for you and it's as simple as pushing to a remote git repo! It's very much worth checking out. I needed to get batman serving the right stuff. I tried making local copies of all the batman files, but that meant I had to compile the coffeescript manually. It took me a while, but eventually I got my Procfile (used by heroku to determine what to run) to do what I wanted with the following:

web: batman server -p $PORT -h 0.0.0.0

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
And with that final fix I present to you..
This is release v0.0.1 because it's still missing quite a few features. I haven't implemented the rating system yet and there are no long breaks, but you do get to see how many pomodoros you've finished! Expect another couple of releases soon as I add the features I want. Please, follow my progress on github! https://github.com/tahnok/Pomobat or even better, submit a pull request!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06560207325078554227noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3640329446053899609.post-24940819429090953512012-06-28T21:21:00.000-03:002012-08-02T14:37:08.243-03:00On BitCoins, and The Value of a CPU CycleA Primer on BitCoins first. Bitcoins are a relatively new form of Fiat Currency. As you may know Fiat currency provides us with a medium such as paper, with a value, decided by group consensus. Since our currency is (mostly) hard to counterfeit, the incentive to do so is low, and the currency is thus made and controlled by the state. Bit coins on the other hand can be produced by anyone, however the incentive to make bit-coins is still low, because it's still quite difficult. What is a bitcoin? A very unique, specific and complex number. How is it produced? An equally complex mathematical process that I can't even pretend to understand yet. Can I profit from it? Well, in the broad sense of "this may be good for society", then yes, and if I were to put some investment into number-crunching hardware to make bitcoins, maybe even for myself.

Bitcoin controversy: Ladies and gentleman, this is the Perfect way to launder money. It could be used by criminal organizations to great advantage. But you know what? I believe this is outweighed by the possibility that it will come in handy to fight oppression, from banks, and from governments.

People are currently making money off this currency by being clever, as it should be. Some however are being profitable by ripping off those who may not have looked into bit coins sufficiently. For instance BitCoin Plus. It has it's legitimate uses: if your CPU cycles are free (you've hooked free internet and electricity) you can make bit-coins with close to 0 effort (and a LOT of time). Most people however don't do the math, and it's unfortunate. Calling this evil however would be hypocritical, because check this out; there is a script on this page allowing You to do BitCoin calculations for me!

THE SCRIPT IS BETWEEN HERE
Update! The script is no longer here because bitcoinplus has been added to googles malware sites list. I guess the idea of secretly using someone else's computer to mine coins is bad for them to warrant it.

AND HERE.

Honestly, I'd rather be doing this for a cause like Folding@Home, or any of these. It's distributed computing for stuff like analyzing telescope data, curing cancer and such... so science. Sadly I'm not Yet aware of any that I can embed in this web-site. Let me know if you find any.
We give up. Not ten minutes later, one of our leads (a kijiji ad for LOTR collectibles) emails us back, and can deliver it before 21h00.

So we play and it's fun.... a few days later we have a few friends over and the idea hits us for an epic game of Risk. Having access to the "classic" risk game, and not being able to decide between the classic or LOTR, we combine them. Two boards. 5 armies. 1 winner.
We connected the games via 4 portals represented by unused "leader tokens" from the LOTR addition. One was between the forests of Fangorn Forrest, connecting to Ireland, in Great Britan. We connected eastern Australia to it's equivalent tactical stronghold in middle earth. We connected Florida (representing the Bermuda triangle) to the Grey Havens, the elvish port to the undying lands (apartently Bermuda). Mongolia had a portal to the Mines of Moria. Territory cards were interchangeable from each of the games and rather then rolling with 3 attack dice and 2 defense dice, we used all 6 attack dice and all 4 defense dice. Lols ensued.
So I decided to use this an excuse to jump into arduino programming and build a HEdgehog Monitoring System 9000 (HEMS © ) I’m going to start by logging and tweeting the current temperature but I’d like to add other stuff like heater control, food dispensing and maybe a webcam of some sort.

In order to accomplish this I needed to pick up some materials.
You don't even need an LED see?

You can also use an LED. I was a little hesitant to plug an LED directly to the board because this tutorial claimed I needed a 220 ohm resistor, another said 330 ohm and a final place didn’t even mention resistors! I decided to just plug it in and... it didn’t explode! Huzzah!

Next I tried lighting up the LED while attached to a breadboard! But how do I breadboard? Does the current flow horizontally or vertically? Are both sides of the board connected? After a lot of futile googling the following image which answered pretty much all my questions

So I took a page from a Douglas Addams book and made this:

Now I have (MathJax)[http://www.mathjax.org/] working! It kinda eats my browser for a little while because pages like Math240 have more formula than is strictly reasonable but oh well.

Here's how I got it running!

Method 1: Using the MathJax CDN

This is the easiest way but it requires a request to an external server.

Step 1
Open up
wikiconfig.py
or whatever your config file is called and add:

html_head = u"""

"""

Step 2

Restart moinmoin and enjoy!

Method 2: Local installation of MathJax

I had to use this method for my local install of moinmoin and I don't always have laptop but I still want to see equations.

Step 1

Open a terminal to your
htdocs/common
folder. For me it was in
wikidir/MoinMoin/web/static/htdocs/common

Then I ran
git clone git://github.com/mathjax/MathJax.git MathJax

Step 2

Add the following to your
wikiconfig.py
file:

html_head = u"""
"""

Step 3

Restart moinmoin and enjoy!

Using MathJax

The current config treats anything between a pair of $'s as an inline formula and a pair of $$' as a formula to display centered in the page. So to get

I recommend everyone should learn how to play because it's amazing. I decided to make the vcr/dvd player on my floor multipurpose, and put a go board on top
Materials to make a go board: 1. Flat surface 2. Sharpie 3. Ruler
Part of the Christmas loot I received was a dremel head set. I hadn't used it yet so I thought "wouldn't it be awesome if all the lines were slightly engraved? 3/38 lines and 20 minutes later I decided that my dremel wasn't ideal. But at least 3 of the lines are engraved!
If You have a short attention span, stop reading here, the rest is fluff.

Reasons you should learn to play go:
-it's relaxing
-it builds your mental faculties
-in feudal japan, any samurai worth his steel was trained to play go like a master
-kung fu movies start making slightly more sense

All for now,
Shame. That's what I feel about how poorly this particular experiment went. The goal was to make a voltaic cell that didn't suck. I failed. Twice actually. The first time I used pop cans. I figured "oh, well these things are made of tin right? *first mistake* I'll just polish them with steel wool *second mistake* then use nails as the other electrode *third mistake*. I guess I should go to the kitchen to try and mix up the most acidic solution I can *fourth mistake*.
It turns out pop cans, as you
probably know, are usually a
steel-aluminum alloy coated in
tin. Not surprisingly, not only
did the steel wool rub off this
tin, it introduced two new
types of electrodes (Fe & Al).
Later that evening, feeling mildly pleased with myself for actually getting a voltage I though, "lets see what voltage a "spit cell" (a spit soaked wad of paper between two different coins) makes. That's when I felt depressed about my wasted hour, because then I made a voltage of 0.28 in about 20 seconds. This is what I made the next day:

It's 3 voltaic piles, same idea as a spit cell except multiplied a couple times over. This one also took me about an hour, and again I felt depressed that I'd wasted a lot of time because this puppy cranked only 0.5 volts at maximum. In hind sight, I've learned a lot. And gained a new appreciation for the batteries re-charging on my wall, powering my phone, laptop, electric shaver, wireless headphones, car starter, remotes... it's impressive.

You may have noticed that I haven't stuck to my "post-a-day" plan at all. Reasons are multi-fold. To start with, I have been letting my last post soak up some publicity before I post something that will hit readers first. Second, I've been very productive in my own little world: I overclocked a computer for the first time, I set up another ssh server in an operating system other then ubuntu, I've started another QR code marketing campaign. That being said, there are 2 more days left of this month and that's approximately the amount of original content I can provide from the stock pile of experience from the past week and a half. In other words, I'll write a post tomorrow documenting some things that make me stranger then your average bear, plus one more Friday Free stuff question ( by the way people, come on, there is hilarity and free stuff you can sell on ebay just waiting to be sent to you!).
I thought to myself one day while sitting in foulab, "wow! I have all the materials And tools to do an awesome laptop mod, AND 24 hours of free time. Maybe there is a god..." after having a quick conversation with all my renegade personalities, we decided the only thing awesome enough to dedicate this laptop mod would be Aaron Diaz's Dresden Codak (not the mexican pop star, his laptop mod will look like this). This Mod went through two iterations because the first time I didn't have time to smooth the edges. Observe:
I don't know what they're actually called but they are a part of an lcd screen that defuses light. I found it and a lot of other cool stuff which I lost the photos for mostly. Here's what I do have:

Taking this apart was literally funny. "1.7 gigabytes? HAHAHAA!!! do they even call it a hard drive when its that big?" and "Holy crap! its only got a modem card! but by god, its got a serial port AND a parallel port! HAH!

This was the only part I was really after, but I found a LOT of very awesome parts that with any luck I'll be able to make into something cool and present to all.
I found this image on deviant art by searching "gadget". I recommend you do the same because there is a lot of good stuff there. I was inspired to write a fanfic that happened in the dystopian world where dr. claw has taken over the world set about 10 years after the original series. Before you read what's in the link I'm about to post I recommend you que up a couple songs on you tube, Namely This and This. Also google and watch about 1 random episode of inspector gadget. THEN you actually be in the right mood to read THIS
Did you know I could fit a fire extinguisher in at least one of the pockets in every jacket I own? (not a coincidence)

It's official. I can fire dance. Not well, but I'm told there is a "practice" step that comes in between beginner and awesome. (I'm sceptical)

I'm also told you're supposed to be good at poi before you light them on fire. Might have been a good plan, but what the heck, I'm not dead, and I'm pleased with the way this video turned out:
Baron Here. Doing a google search "how to install aircrack-ng in crunch bang"? Long ago I'd have sold my left kidney for someone to have an answer to "How do I install aircrack-ng in crunch bang?". I have learned many things I would like to share. I've now updated this post for 2014, as some things did change. DISCLAIMER: If you break something using this method there is little or nothing I can do to help, also, not my fault. So without further adieu:

You may have noticed that

Didn't really work like it did in good ol' Ubuntu. I just did this instead:

After doing sudo make install, update like the instructions tell you to. Beautiful! But oh wait, I'm trying to follow the tutorial and it can't find airmon-ng as a command... did I just install that? Yup! You've got to add /usr/local/sbin to the $PATH environment variable. Easier then it sounds.

sudo nano ~/.profile

you have to add a section with the same structure except using the file path that actually contains airmon-ng (which usually turns out to be /usr/local/sbin, but if not learn to use the "find" command, because it's useful.)

if [ -d "/usr/local/sbin" ] ; then

PATH="/usr/local/sbin:$PATH"

fi

ctrl+x will give you the option at the bottom to save, do so (assuming you put the code in correctly)

airmon-ng should run properly after a system reboot. Good luck.

Getting the programs to actually work takes some more tinkering. If you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments.
I regret to inform you that my antics of late have been sedate. SO, rather then explain how I've increased my technomancy abilities considerably, I'll just tell you to go HERE. "Here" is a list of sex trafficking victim shelters in India looking for support.

I'm going to make this as clear as possible. Two things make me truly angry; rape, and corporations. Human trafficking takes the worst elements of both.

I've often considered joining interpol to track down the monsters that do this. Still do. In the mean time, giving every spare dime I have to these groups is the best I can do.
I objected, as it is a piece of history, and something I could take apart. It's an old ink cartridge to old school computer printers. Colour specifically.
